Location: East York
Home Type: 1920s Semi-Detached
Scope: Full Main Floor Retrofit
Special Features: Open-concept kitchen and living spaces, reclaimed doors, preserved stained glass and original architectural details, above-code energy retrofit.
This century-old Toronto home was transformed through a main-floor renovation that balances a brighter, more open contemporary layout with the character and materials of an older house.
The homeowners wanted to modernize the way the main floor functioned without erasing its history. Greening Homes opened up the principal living spaces and worked with the clients to retain original features while incorporating reclaimed materials throughout the renovation. The result is a home that feels renewed rather than replaced.
The kitchen became a central part of that transformation. Its open, light-filled design is complemented by reclaimed doors painted a vibrant yellow, bringing warmth and personality to the new space. Elsewhere, carefully preserved and reused details maintain a connection to the home’s past, including the colourful stained-glass window that creates a focal point in the vestibule.
Behind the visible transformation, the project was also retrofitted to achieve energy performance above minimum building-code requirements. Greening Homes incorporated responsible material selection, efficient use of resources, waste management and attention to indoor air quality throughout the renovation.
The result brings together old and new without treating them as opposites: a more open, efficient and contemporary home that retains the details, materials and character that make a century house distinctive.
